Renewable Energy

The Centre for Renewable Energy at DkIT (CREDIT) was established in June 2002 with a mission to assist with Ireland’s coming transition to a renewable energy-based economy. CREDIT is in the process of becoming a national focal point for renewable energy research and development and academic programmes. In August 2005, CREDIT installed the world’s first large commercial turbine to be located on a college campus, and is projected to generate half of Dundalk IT’s electricity needs.

Current Research

CREDIT is involved in the following research and developmental projects:

  • Electricity storage – the value of electricity storage as an element of windfarms or as an element of a wind autoproduction project;
  • Wind power station – A design investigation of a windfarm with storage and open cycle gas turbines on site, creating a fully dispatchable power station;
  • ECCO model of the Irish economy – simulating the performance of the economy as we make the transition to energy sustainability;
  • Small wind turbine development – the design and development of a 3m diameter grid-connect wind turbine;
  • Miscellaneous Masters students theses associated with our MSc in Renewable Energy Systems;
  • Wind autoproduction studies – monitoring and analyzing the performance of Ireland’s only wind autoproduction project, as well as feasibilities for other such projects elsewhere in the country;
  • Dundalk 2020 – assisting with the development of the “zone of sustainability” in such areas as wood-fired district heating system, a second autoproducing wind turbine, and developing a carbon footprint for the area.
